I realised (also mentioned by family and friends) that I watch way too many movies for my own good, you could say I’m a movie fanatic so I thought I would try a new thing on my blog and review movies, I’m not saying I’m a movie critic or anything, it’s just my thoughts and feelings towards the movie.
The Fault In Our Stars.
This highly anticipated movie based off the novel of the
same title by John Green was realised today June 5th and of course I
went to see it. Being a fan of the book I had high expectations for this movie
to live up to the standard, I was also pretty excited when it was announced
that Josh Boone (Stuck In Love, 50/50) was going to be the directing this movie
and the cast would include Shailene Woodley (The Descendants, Spectacular Now,
Divergent), Ansel Elgort (Carrie, Divergent) and Nat Wolff (Stuck In Love), all
amazing actors and actresses. The movie follows a young girl 17 year old Hazel
Grace Lancaster who is suffering from Thyroid cancer who has reached a stage
where she hasn’t to wheel around a canister of oxygen wherever she goes and
meets Gus who is in remission from
osteosarcoma, but the cancer took the former athlete's leg through her support
group her mother forces her to go to.
They immediately appreciate each other's not-always-sunny approach to living with illness and the inevitable that is oblivion. Gus falls fast and hard for Hazel, while she insists on remaining friends to keep from causing anyone else pain with what she sees as her inevitably unhappy ending. This movie captured the essence of that it is a story about two people living with cancer but it’s not about cancer but of their incredible love story and the fact that they both know that it will be their first and last epic love. From the start of the film reveals Hazel narrating the beauties of life, how you can “sugarcoat it and it can be fixed with a Peter Gabriel song, it’s just not the truth, sorry” immediately foreshadows the inevitable unhappy life that is to follow. Shailene Woodley plays Hazel Grace so well, being both strong and also weak and vulnerable when needed to be, Ansel Elgort who plays Augustus Waters the charismatic person who falls hard for Hazel shows his philosophies of the world and how he “would be honored to have my heart broken by you” , his countless attempts to woo Hazel because of his feelings for her, this is shown in less than five minutes of meeting her when they are outside of the church when he’s staring at her telling her that he “ enjoys looking at beautiful people, and I decided a while ago not to deny myself the simpler pleasures of existence.” And Nat Wolff who plays Augustus’ best friend who has a cancer which slowly takes away his sight.
Hazel and Gus' mutually ticking "grenade" compel them into this incredible love story which takes a Sceptical Hazel to come alive into the innocent arms of Augustus, whose charm is shown from the beginning of the world wind romance. It takes us on the journey of a first love, a trip to Europe, a meeting with Hazel’s favorite author, a last love — into what may be their only summer. This movie will definitely raise your spirits and break your heart and for Hazel and Augustus, it does both.

As
the movie goes on, it really pays homage to the movie, from the characters to
the scenery, it really was amazing to see this book come to life, the movie
ended on a beautiful note which I was glad about. However like all reviews,
they are a few faults shall we say, not big deal breaker that would prevent you
from seeing the movie. From someone who has read and was a fan of the books
before watching the movie, there were a few scenes in the book which I would
have liked to have made the final cut of the movie, some which I thought was
kind of important to the making and/or end of the relationship between Hazel
and Augustus. Whoever has read the book and seen the movie may know which
scenes I’m talking about, and also some quotes I enjoyed throughout the book
that had hidden meaning and was just beautifully written but other than that,
this movie was incredible to watch, a nod to John Green for writing this novel,
Josh Boone for bring this book to life so well, and Shailene, Ansel and Nat for
bringing life into the characters, I truly can’t imagine anyone else playing
them.
It was really a lovely
and heart wrenching love story which tugs at our heartstrings and doesn’t fail
to have us all tearing up. I highly recommend you to watch this movie and have
some tissues ready.
Okay?
Okay.
Okay?
Okay.
I thought I would add in some of my favourite quotes from the novel, I love all of these the way they are portrayed in the novel/movie are just lovely. (the ones with // are my favourites among the favourites)
“Oh, I wouldn't
mind, Hazel Grace. It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you.”
// “Maybe 'okay' will be our 'always”
“I'll fight it. I'll fight it for you. Don't you worry about me, Hazel Grace. I'm okay. I'll find a way to hang around and annoy you for a long time.”
// “My thoughts are stars I can't fathom into constellations.”
“I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.”
// “You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world, old man, but you do have some say in who hurts you.”
“The world," he said, "is not a wish-granting factory.”
“I fell in love like you would fall asleep: slowly and then all at once.”
//“I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity”
// “You gave me forever within the numbered days”
"Okay?"
// “Maybe 'okay' will be our 'always”
